COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUES

In response to the many requests we receive to commemorate important events in people’s lives, we now offer the opportunity to mark these events with the installation of a commemorative plaque in the garden.
We will arrange for the plaque to be engraved with an inscription and for its installation. We do charge for this service and have a number of conditions which are outlined below:

POSITION

The plaques are sized to fit a single brick and can be installed on any of the garden’s walls (excluding the building). We are happy for you to choose a preferred position for your plaque, however we do reserve the right to adjust this if required – you will be informed of any change of location.

DURATION

We fully expect your plaque to be in the garden permanently, however as this may be dependent on matters beyond our control, we reserve the right to remove/reposition plaques if this becomes necessary. We will inform you if this situation arises. While we have not had any previous plaques tampered with or stolen, there is a small chance that this may take place as we are a public garden. In the unlikely event of this taking place, we would not accept any liability for repair or replacement.

INSCRIPTION

We are happy for you to provide us with your choice of wording for your plaque, however we do reserve the right to request this be changed if we do not feel it is appropriate for the garden. When deciding on your preferred inscription, do keep in mind the dimensions of the plaques we offer; the more words included, the smaller the final text. For all plaques, we would ask that you are creative in your choice of wording; we would hope that your chosen inscription will add to the sense of the garden as a ‘secret space’, will intrigue other visitors and generate discussion. Inscriptions that make some reference to the garden would be most appropriate. While you may include single names or initials, we would prefer plaques to be anonymous. For memorial plaques, we would suggest an informal phrase that has some personal significance for the event or person you are wishing to recognise, a phrase that celebrates their life, their interests, their friendships and connections. This could be a line from a favourite song, a favourite book, poem or film, or something that you, as friends and family, will recognise and remember.

“For Sheila, who knew where the secret places are”

“Heaven shall be here”

NOTE: We do not accept traditional formal memorial inscriptions, showing date of birth, death and cemetery style wording; for example ‘in loving memory of…’, ‘gone, but not forgotten…’ etc. We do not accept inscriptions that would cause offence to other garden visitors.
